Purified diets is a nutritionally adequate diet that could be used to standardize studies among laboratories. The intent of standardization of test diets for laboratory animals is to reduce the variation inherent in cereal-based or natural ingredient-based diets and to facilitate in terpretation of results among experiments and laboratories.
Purified diet is the diet that its nutrients are supplied by purified ingredient. The protein requirement is met by the milk protein (casein) or other purified proteins, along with added one or more amino acids to meet amino acid requirements. Carbohydrates are supplied by corn starch and sucrose, vegetables oil provides the fat, and cellulose supplies the fiber. Vitamin and mineral mixes specific to animal are added to ensure adequacy. This means that this type of diet can avoid the limitations existed in the cereal diet, such as no phytochemicals, and can modify nutrients for making experimental diets to meet the demand of most research in the biological and nutritional and clinical science fields.
